Free Redirect Checker

Every redirect adds latency and dilutes link equity. This tool follows the complete redirect chain from your URL to the final destination, showing each hop's status code and URL — so you can spot redirect loops, unnecessary chains, and HTTP-to-HTTPS issues.

What This Tool Checks

  • check_circleFull redirect chain trace: shows every hop from source to final URL
  • check_circleHTTP status codes for each step: 301, 302, 307, 308 permanent/temporary redirects
  • check_circleDetects redirect loops (A → B → A) before they cause infinite recursion
  • check_circleFlags long chains (3+ hops) that add unnecessary latency
  • check_circleHTTP to HTTPS upgrade detection
  • check_circleResponse time measurement for the full chain

Why This Matters for SEO

Each redirect in a chain adds approximately 100–300ms of latency, directly hurting your page speed and Core Web Vitals. More importantly, redirect chains dilute PageRank: Google has stated that link equity (PageRank) may be reduced with each redirect hop. Long chains also make it harder for Googlebot to efficiently crawl your site. The ideal redirect chain is a single 301 from old URL to final destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a redirect chain?expand_more
A redirect chain occurs when URL A redirects to URL B, which redirects to URL C, and so on, before reaching the final destination. For example: http://example.com → https://example.com → https://www.example.com → https://www.example.com/home. That's 3 redirects before reaching the page. Each hop adds latency and may reduce the link equity passed along the chain.
What is the difference between a 301 and 302 redirect?expand_more
A 301 redirect is permanent — it tells Google "this page has moved forever." Google transfers most of the original page's ranking signals (PageRank) to the new URL. A 302 redirect is temporary — it says "this page has moved for now." Google is less likely to transfer full PageRank for 302 redirects and may continue indexing the original URL. For SEO, always use 301 redirects for permanent moves.
How many redirects are too many?expand_more
Any chain longer than 1 redirect is worth investigating. Chains of 3 or more hops are a problem: they add 300ms+ of latency, may cause Googlebot to stop following the chain, and dilute link equity. The goal is to redirect once, directly from the original URL to the final destination. Use this tool to identify multi-hop chains you can simplify.
What causes a redirect loop?expand_more
A redirect loop occurs when two or more URLs redirect to each other in a cycle (A → B → A, or A → B → C → A). This usually happens from misconfigured server rules — for example, an .htaccess rule that rewrites all HTTP to HTTPS, combined with another rule that accidentally rewrites HTTPS back to HTTP. Browsers and Googlebot will both refuse to load pages in a redirect loop.
Do redirects hurt SEO?expand_more
A single 301 redirect has minimal SEO impact — most PageRank passes through. However, redirect chains (multiple hops), redirect loops, chains containing 302s instead of 301s, and chains that end in a 404 all hurt SEO. Old links pointing to pages that were deleted without redirects also hurt SEO. The best practice is to minimize redirects and ensure all chains resolve in a single 301.
